What is an Open Mic?
Generally speaking, an open mic is a space for creatives to share their work in a public place. Usually, there is a sign up time and artists can fill a slot. Each venue is slightly different. Some open mics are for comedians, musician, poets or all of the above. It is usually up to the venue how long your time slot is to perform, but in my experience, it can range from 5 to 15 minutes. Often, the crowd consists of the other performers which is a great space for collaboration, networking, and support.
What makes Open Mic worth going to?
There are many reasons someone might find one open mic better than another.
For a performer:
Crowds size may encourage or discourage you depending on experience level.
Sound system and controls are a big part of the experience. If the host makes you good or bad, this could have a big impact on whether you return or not.
Supportive hosts, crowds, and other performers can be a huge reason you enjoy a certain venue’s open mic.
For a viewer:
Quality sound systems are a big part of the experience for viewers as well. If the sound is too loud or off, it might discourage viewers from returning.
